Chiropractors are not surprised to learn the conclusions to a recent study of medical doctors and their knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions. The authors of an article in Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery set out to determine how much medical school graduates know about muscle, joint, and bone problems. All participants has just passed the necessary courses to become physicians.
The result: 82 percent of those interviewed failed to show basic understanding of musculoskeletal medicine. A full 78 percent did not indicate “basic competency”. This is true despite the fact that one of every four or five primary care visits is for a musculoskeletal problem.
In contrast, chiropractors are thoroughly trained to treat aches or pains in the joints, bones, and muscles, especially those of the spine or the neck. Chiropractors complete a minimum four years of education emphasizing muscle and skeleton management and care. The authors concluded that “medical school preparation in musculoskeletal medicine is inadequate”.
